Before you start
"Use source of truth" sits at the top of the section "Stock forwarding", on the page "Stock & order configuration" under "Fulfillment". It is a switch with a connection selector next to it, and you may pick more than one connection.
Toggle the switch, pick the connection or connections, then click "Save changes" at the bottom right of that section. Only then does it take effect.
Switched off, stock flows exactly as the individual switches in the grid say: every source you enabled pushes its own changes. Switched on, the connections you picked become the leading stock administration. e-tailize reads the current stock there and synchronises it to every other sales channel.
What happens next
With a source of truth on, the counts of the connections you picked are the ones forwarded to your other systems, and the other systems that could lead themselves are no longer read. A webshop that is not the leading connection is not read for stock at all, so nothing arrives from there to compete with the leading counts.
That is exactly the point of it. Pick a source of truth when one system genuinely owns your stock: the webshop you administer in, or the warehouse system that counts the shelves. Leave it off when you want the grid switches alone to decide.
You can see the result on the "Forwarding matrix" page under "Settings" and "Fulfillment details". It shows per project which connection is configured as the leading stock source, and it says so in red when there is none.
Common problems
A stock change in the PIM does not arrive. Check the switch from the PIM to the leading connection in the "Stock forwarding" grid: it stays available with a source of truth on, and it has to be on and saved.
A product keeps the wrong count. Check that the product exists in the leading system with the same EAN code. What is not there cannot be read either.

FAQ
Can more than one connection be the source of truth?
Yes, the selector takes several connections. Do keep them systems that genuinely hold their own stock, otherwise you are back to two administrations.
Does the source of truth also decide about orders?
No. It only concerns stock. Orders and tracking codes have their own sections on the same page, see Forward orders and keep track and trace flowing.
Do I still need the switches in the grid?
Yes. The source of truth says which counts lead, the grid says which connections receive them.
