Before you start

Decathlon runs its marketplace on Mirakl. You fill the content on the Decathlon tab of the product in e-tailize and send it with "List content"; Decathlon reviews it before it appears on the Decathlon site. Five things decide whether a product goes online at all: "Main Title", the product title, the description, the webcatchline and the images. Leave one of them empty and the product stays offline.

Common problems

The product title is not built the way Decathlon wants

Start with the brand, then the model, then the product group, then the gender when relevant, then a hyphen, and close with the essential specification: colour, flavour, number of pieces, weight or dimensions. Keep the whole title to at most 80 characters and name at most three product features. Decathlon recommends around 58 characters for search. Start every word with a capital and copy the brand exactly as the brand writes itself, capitals included. Leave out linking words.

The gender in the title is written as "Heren", "Dames", "Volwassen", "Meisje", "Jongen", "Kind" or "Baby" with "Meisje" or "Jongen".

The title is wrong for a product in a family

The title does not change when a customer picks another product in the same family, so never put a size, a weight or a dimension in it. A colour or a flavour may stay.

Every product in a family belongs in the same category and carries the same gender, so women's shoes and men's shoes never share one family. A family on colour needs "Kleur", "Additional color 1" and "Additional color 2"; a family on size needs the size specification with the same size code on every product; a family on flavour needs "Smaak".

The webcatchline is missing or too long

At most 200 characters, around 155 recommended for search. Open with a short product title, so brand, model and product group, then name three product benefits and who the product is for. What makes yours different and other selling points are optional.

The description is too thin

You have room for 5000 characters, so put all the product information in it: the selling points first, then the technical specifications, the composition and washing instructions and the warranty terms where they apply. Structure it with paragraphs, headings, bold text and bullets. The description renders markdown, so hash marks make a heading, asterisks make text bold or italic and a hyphen at the start of a line makes a bullet. Technical details belong in "Nutrition table nl-NL" and "Samenstelling nl-NL".

The product does not show up on the site

In the guide in your Mirakl back office the required specifications carry an asterisk. Gender and sport decide where a product lands on the site, so a product without a gender most likely appears nowhere.

As a specification the gender has its own values: "BABY BOY" and "BABY GIRL" for babies, with "BABY" added; "BOYS'" and "GIRLS'" for children, with "KINDEREN" added; "HEREN" and "DAMES" for adults, with "VOLWASSENE" added.

The sport you pick does not exist in Mirakl

Decathlon names sports differently in Mirakl than on the Decathlon site: "Hardlopen" on the site is "Joggen" in Mirakl and "Wielrennen" is "Gravel bike". Look your sport up in the Mirakl value list instead of copying the site. Add a sport only when the product really focuses on one.

The images are refused or look wrong

Square jpeg files, from 960 by 960 up to 2000 by 2000 pixels, at least two per product and more than two is better. The primary image shows the whole product on a white or transparent background; the others can show another side, the product in use or its dimensions. Remove logos and icons that are not part of the product, and name the file after the product title. Does one EAN cover several products, such as a complete outfit? Then upload an image for each of them. Shoes point with the toe to the right.

The text does not sound like Decathlon

Address the reader as "je" and never as "u". Name what the customer gets out of the product, write enthusiastically about sport and healthy living, and keep the vocabulary simple enough for a broad audience. Skip slang, avoid English words such as "Kids", write confidently rather than hopefully, and call a product affordable rather than cheap.

FAQ

Where do I find the current Decathlon rules?

In the guide in your Mirakl back office. That guide is the version that counts, so check a rule there before you act on it.

Does "Main Title" show on the Decathlon site?

No. Fill it with the English name of the product. It is only used to find the product inside Mirakl and never appears on the website.

Which fields hold the Dutch text?

The content fields exist per language: "Product Title nl-NL", "Description nl-NL" and "Webcatchline nl-NL". Fill them with your Dutch text. In the wizard, Decathlon offers "Belgium (Dutch)" as the Dutch language country option, and no Netherlands.
