Start selling on Amazon Handmade

Would you like to start selling handmade products via Amazon Handmade? Then you need to follow a few simple steps. Below we explain step by step how you can start selling via Amazon Handmade.

Step 1: Create a selling account on Amazon

To start selling through Amazon Handmade, you will first need to create a selling account on Amazon. At Amazon you can choose an individual or professional sales account.

In case you want to sign up as an ‘Artisan’ (Amazon Handmade seller) you need to have a professional sales account. The cost for this is $39.99 per month.

Already have a selling account on Amazon? Then it is important to check what kind of sales account you have. If you have an individual sales account, you will need to upgrade it to a professional sales account.

Step 2: Apply to become an Artisan

After you have created a (professional) selling account on Amazon, you can apply to join Amazon Handmade. Once approved, the $39.99 monthly fee will be waived.

During the application to join the Amazon Handmade community, Amazon will ask questions about you and your business. We’ll take you through the Amazon Handmade application process below.

1. What kind of creator are you?

First of all, enter your name, surname and e-mail address. Amazon then asks what kind of maker you are. You can choose from the following options:

  • Maker works alone;
  • Maker with fewer than 20 employees;
  • Collaborative group of makers;
  • Otherwise.

2. How do you describe your work?

Amazon now knows what kind of maker you are and would like to know more about what your work and production process looks like. First you tell about how your products are handmade:

  • My products are completely handmade;
  • My products are hand modified;
  • I don’t make my products myself, but customize them based on the customer’s wishes;
  • I sell handmade products from others.

3. What does the production process look like?

Then you tell Amazon more about what the manufacturing process looks like in terms of designing and manufacturing the products. Here you have the following options:

  • I design and make my own products;
  • I design and make my own products, but a small part is carried out by an external party;
  • I design my own products, but have them produced by another party;
  • I do not design and produce my own products.

4. What percentage of the production process is carried out by you or your employees?

Amazon would like to know what percentage of the production process is done by you or your employees. You can choose from the following options:

  • 75-100%
  • 50-74%
  • 25-49%
  • 1-24%
  • 0% (none)

5. Tell more about your products and processes

In the next section of the application, you provide Amazon with a step-by-step description of the manufacturing process and tell more about the materials and techniques you use. Answer questions like:

  • What materials do you use?
  • Which tools and/or techniques do you use?
  • How long does each step of the process take?

6. Upload photos of your work

Amazon wants to know what your products look like. For this you need to upload photos of your handmade products. To avoid delays in the approval process, it is important to visualize all details and provide clear photos.

7. Select an appropriate product category

In the last step of the application procedure, you indicate in which product category you want to sell your handmade products. Check out the list of available categories on this page to see which category your product fits best.

Step 3: Create product listings in your Handmade store

Have you gone through the Amazon Handmade application process and has your application been approved? Then you can create an Amazon Handmade store in Seller Central. Here you can then offer your handmade products for sale.

Since you will be offering unique, handmade products, it is essential to create clear product descriptions and add detailed images. Also name the USPs (Unique Selling Points) of your handmade product to convince potential buyers to buy your product.
